~1. What is your name?
Marcia Terry
~2.Where are you located?
Tacoma, Washington
~3.Tell me a little about yourself and how you got started doing what you do?
I'm a stay at home mom to a very fun two year old boy. I taught kindergarten through third grade for eight years before leaving teaching to be with my son. I've always enjoyed making cards and sculpting quirky little figures. I'd never thought of selling them though until I met a wonderful mom who crochets and told me about her shop on Etsy (JustBeHappy). I decided to give it a try and here I am.
~4.What type of items would I find in your shop?
In my shop you'll find funny little sculptures (like Mr. Frenchie) and a bright assortment of mini cards, matchbook style cards and greeting cards. I enjoy embellishing my cards with unexpected details like felt animals and stitched paper. Most of the materials I use are eco friendly like bamboo thread ( a sustainable resource), eco-fi felt (made from recycled plastic bottles) and cardstock that is recycled or certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). The mailing envelopes and invoice paper I use are recycled too. As my shop grows I will be adding more eco friendly items and materials. I'd love to be a really green, eco friendly shop one day.
~5.How long have you been crafting?
Ever since I can remember! My mom loves making all kinds of crafts and she always let me craft with her. Together we painted, sculpted, sewed and baked. I loved it all with the exception of crochet, it's just something I never got the hang of so I really admire people who can do it!
~6.What inspires you the most to create?
People! Many of my little sculptures are based on people I've met throughout my life. They are the fun characters that you may meet for only a few moments but they make a lasting impression. When it comes to card design my inspiration comes from custom requests. One of my very first custom orders was for a birthday card for a four year old girl. The little girl had asked her mom for a card with an angel and flowers. I'd never made a card like that before and was so happy and relieved that my vision for the card was a perfect fit with what she wanted.
~7.What is the one "must have" item you need with you when you create?
My must have item is....solitude. I do my work when everyone else is asleep so I usually work at night and can squeeze in a bit of work when my son is napping.
~8.What is one of your favorite items from your favorites list on Etsy?
Oooh this is a tough one to answer, there are so many amazing items! Since I have to pick just one it's this sweet little mouse mom and baby print. http://www.etsy.com/listing/71429355/mama-mouse-and-baby-5-x7-illustration
~9.When you aren't crafting, what do you do?
I am so lucky to be home with my son and I do as much I can to enrich his life so we go on plenty of playdates, we visit the zoo, childrens museums, go for walks in the park and play outside as much as the weather allows. When we're home we paint, bake (always a VERY messy affair) and play whatever games his imagination conjures up.
